BENEBION was born from a simple but powerful idea: to apply ionizing energy in ways that protect public health and enhance product quality. To bring this vision to life, we incorporated under the legal name PHYTOSAN S.A. de C.V. and began commercial production in 2011 under the brand name BENEBION — short for “Beneficial Ions.”

 

Our roots trace back to a key regulatory milestone: the 2003 publication of 7 CFR §305.56 by the United States Department of Agriculture, which officially authorized irradiation as a phytosanitary treatment. This opened the door to the safe, chemical-free export of fruits and vegetables — and BENEBION emerged as one of the first companies in Mexico to provide this technology at scale.

 

Over time, we expanded our capabilities to serve a growing range of industries. Our wide treatment portfolio now includes:

 

• Phytosanitary treatment of fresh produce for international export

• Sterilization of single-use medical devices

• Pharmaceutical and cosmetic decontamination

• Food safety applications such as pathogen reduction in spices, meats, and dried products

• Packaging sterilization and other specialty processes

 

 

In 2017, we achieved ISO 13485 certification, demonstrating our commitment to the highest standards in medical device sterilization.

 

To meet increasing demand for flexible, high-throughput solutions, we are now expanding into X-ray technology. Our new facility — equipped with a state-of-the-art electron accelerator — will complement our gamma capabilities and offer greater efficiency, environmental sustainability, and scalability for our clients.
